Understand whether your vein symptoms need reflux mapping, DVT ultrasound, or sclerotherapy assessment.

Three different vein pathways

Venous reflux mapping is used for longstanding heaviness, aching, varicose veins, ankle swelling, or venous skin change and maps backward flow for treatment planning. A DVT scan is a different, time-sensitive protocol for a possible deep-vein clot, often prompted by new one-sided swelling or calf pain. Sclerotherapy evaluation considers the visible surface veins, symptoms, medical history, goals, and whether ultrasound is clinically needed before deciding if injection treatment may be suitable.

What duplex can and cannot answer

Within the selected protocol, duplex can assess the examined veins for compressibility, blood flow, clot, previous-clot change, and reflux. It does not explain every cause of pain or swelling, diagnose pulmonary embolism, or replace clinical assessment. A reflux map and a DVT scan are not interchangeable, and a normal result only answers the territory and question that were actually examined; blood tests or other imaging may still be needed in some pathways.

Red flags come before a routine vein appointment

New one-sided swelling, calf pain, warmth, or redness needs prompt medical assessment, especially after surgery, immobility, pregnancy, cancer treatment, or long travel. Chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, fainting, or coughing blood may indicate a medical emergency; call 112 in Kuwait rather than waiting for a clinic booking. Active or uncontrolled bleeding from a varicose vein also needs immediate medical help.

From assessment to a report and plan

The visit identifies the clinical question, performs the relevant examination when indicated, and documents the findings in a report for clinical review. Reflux mapping may support varicose-vein treatment planning, while a DVT pathway may require urgent treating-team action. A sclerotherapy assessment does not guarantee treatment; suitability, alternatives, expected limits, and any need for referral are decided individually after review.

Frequently Asked Questions
Not always. The need depends on the history and examination. Ultrasound becomes more relevant when there is swelling, heaviness, large varicose veins, skin change, a prior clot, or concern about deeper reflux.
