Doppler vs duplex ultrasound
Patients often say Doppler ultrasound when they mean vascular duplex. Duplex combines vessel imaging with Doppler flow assessment, giving information about structure, direction of flow, and flow speed.
Different questions need different protocols
A scan for suspected DVT is different from venous reflux mapping, leg arterial duplex, carotid duplex, or an abdominal vascular study. Each protocol answers a defined clinical question, so a normal result from one protocol does not exclude every other vascular or non-vascular cause of pain or swelling.
Preparation depends on the body area
Most arm, leg, and neck vascular ultrasound studies need no special preparation. Some abdominal studies, including selected renal or mesenteric artery protocols, may require fasting or specific instructions. Follow the preparation confirmed for your exact exam and bring the referral and previous reports when available.
Emergency symptoms come first
Chest pain or shortness of breath, new stroke symptoms, or a limb that suddenly becomes cold and severely painful needs emergency care rather than a routine Doppler appointment. Call 112 in Kuwait.
