Cold Feet and Poor Circulation: When to Check Arteries

A practical guide to cold feet, weak pulses, walking pain, diabetes, and when arterial Doppler or ABI testing may help.

Cold feet are not always vascular

Cold feet can be related to temperature, nerve problems, thyroid issues, anemia, medications, or reduced blood flow. Vascular assessment becomes more important when coldness is one-sided, painful, associated with color change, weak pulses, wounds, diabetes, or walking pain.

Tests that may be useful

ABI, Doppler waveform assessment, and arterial duplex ultrasound help evaluate whether blood flow to the legs and feet is reduced and where narrowing may be located.

Important Signs to Mention

One cold painful foot
Blue or black toe
Walking pain
Weak pulses
Diabetes
Slow-healing wound
