Start with the symptom
The right vascular ultrasound depends on the question. One-sided leg swelling may need venous duplex for DVT. Heavy legs and visible varicose veins often need reflux mapping. Walking calf pain or cold feet may need arterial duplex or ABI-style circulation assessment.
When the scan is more specialized
Some questions need targeted protocols: carotid duplex for selected stroke-risk questions, renal artery Doppler for physician-requested kidney artery assessment, aorta and iliac ultrasound for selected aneurysm or inflow questions, and AV fistula scanning for dialysis access concerns.
Safety first
A scan guide cannot replace urgent care. Chest pain, shortness of breath, stroke-like symptoms, sudden severe one-leg swelling, a cold painful foot, or severe sudden abdominal or back pain should be handled as urgent medical problems.
