Varicose Veins vs Spider Veins: What Is the Difference?

Understand the difference between spider veins and varicose veins, symptoms that matter, and when duplex ultrasound is needed.

    Spider veins

Spider veins are small red, blue, or purple surface veins. They may be mainly cosmetic, but can appear with deeper venous reflux in some patients.

    Varicose veins

Varicose veins are larger, bulging veins that may cause heaviness, aching, itching, swelling, skin change, or ulcers. Ultrasound maps the reflux pattern.
