What is Carotid Duplex Ultrasound?
Carotid duplex ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test that uses sound waves to examine the carotid arteries in your neck. These arteries supply blood to your brain, face, and neck.
The test can detect narrowing (stenosis) or blockages in the carotid arteries caused by plaque buildup, which can increase the risk of stroke.
Common Reasons for Referral
- History of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA)
- High blood pressure or high cholesterol
- Diabetes or heart disease
- Smoking history
- Family history of stroke or carotid disease
- Unusual sounds (bruit) heard in neck during examination
What Happens During the Exam
- 1You lie comfortably on an examination table
- 2Ultrasound gel is applied to your neck
- 3A transducer gently scans both sides of your neck
- 4Blood flow patterns are recorded and analyzed
- 5Images are reviewed and documented
